ABOUT THE STANDARD

What Is ISO 45001 and Why Does It Matter for Saudi Arabia?

ISO 45001 is not just a certificate to obtain and file. It is a living management system that requires regular internal audits, documented risk assessments, legal compliance reviews, corrective action cycles, and ongoing evidence of OHS performance improvement. Without trained internal auditors, all of that work depends on expensive external consultants throughout the three-year certification cycle.

OHSAS 18001 was formally withdrawn in 2021. Any contractor still citing it in tender or prequalification documentation is referencing a standard that no longer exists. The transition was not automatic — companies had to explicitly update their management system to meet the new ISO 45001 structure, including addressing areas like worker participation and leadership commitment that were significantly strengthened in the 2018 revision.

ISO 45001:2018 is the international standard for Occupational Health and Safety management systems. It sets out requirements for a system that helps organisations reduce workplace injuries, comply with legal requirements, and improve OHS performance over time. It replaced OHSAS 18001 when the transition period ended in March 2021.

In Saudi Arabia, ISO 45001 matters for three reasons: it is required for Aramco and SABIC contractor prequalification, it aligns with Vision 2030 workplace safety targets, and it replaces OHSAS 18001 which was formally withdrawn in 2021. Companies still referencing OHSAS 18001 in their documentation are operating against an invalid standard. See our comparison of ISO 45001 vs OHSAS 18001 for what changed and what your team needs to update.

For the complete picture of how ISO 45001, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 work together in Saudi Arabia, see our complete ISO management standards guide — including which standards you need for Etimad tenders and Aramco vendor registration.

Companies already holding OHSAS 18001 certification before the 2021 withdrawal date had to conduct a gap assessment, update their documented system, retrain internal auditors, and undergo a transition audit with the certification body. PITC KSA trained numerous Eastern Province contractor teams through this transition. If your company is unsure whether the transition was completed correctly, our lead auditor trainers can advise.

TRAINING PROGRAMME

ISO 45001 Training Courses at PITC KSA Saudi Arabia

ISO 45001 Awareness Training (1 Day)

An introduction to ISO 45001 for workers, supervisors and managers who need to understand the standard and their role within the OHS management system. Covers what ISO 45001 requires, why it matters for the organisation’s certification status, and how each role contributes to compliance. Ideal for all staff on a site moving toward ISO 45001 certification, new joiners in safety-sensitive roles, and workers who need to pass client OHS inductions.

ISO 45001 Internal Auditor Training (2 Days)

Trains participants to conduct internal OHS audits against ISO 45001 requirements. Covers audit planning and preparation, conducting interviews and gathering objective evidence, writing conformance and non-conformance findings, and reporting results to management. Recommended for HSE officers, safety supervisors and quality managers who will run the internal audit programme as part of the organisation’s ISO 45001 certification cycle.

ISO 45001 Lead Auditor Training (5 Days)

The full qualification for managing the ISO 45001 audit programme — including audit planning, team leadership, NCR writing, closing meetings, and certification body liaison. Our Jubail lead auditor course is particularly suited to contractor teams in the Eastern Province. Available across the Kingdom.

WHAT THE STANDARD COVERS

ISO 45001:2018 — Key Clauses and What They Mean for Saudi Contractors

ISO 45001 is structured around ten main clauses under the High Level Structure that ISO uses for all current management system standards. Understanding each clause is essential for HSE officers, internal auditors and lead auditors who need to maintain the system, write non-conformance reports, and brief management on OHS performance against the standard’s requirements.

The most significant clauses for Saudi industrial contractors are Clause 6 (Planning — hazard identification and risk assessment), Clause 8 (Operation — controlling OHS risks on site), Clause 9 (Performance evaluation — monitoring, measurement and internal audit), and Clause 10 (Improvement — incident investigation and corrective action). These four clauses are where most non-conformances are found during Aramco contractor audits and certification body visits.

PITC KSA ISO 45001 training covers every clause in the context of Saudi labour regulations, the Saudi Occupational Safety and Health general requirements issued by the Ministry of Human Resources, and the specific OHS documentation requirements set by Aramco and SABIC for their contractor management and vendor prequalification systems.

Key Clauses Covered in PITC KSA ISO 45001 Training

  • Clause 4 – Context of the organisation and worker needs
  • Clause 5 – Leadership, commitment and worker participation
  • Clause 6 – Planning: hazard identification, risk and opportunity assessment
  • Clause 7 – Support: competence, awareness, communication and documentation
  • Clause 8 – Operational planning and control (including contractors and procurement)
  • Clause 9 – Performance evaluation: monitoring, internal audit and management review
  • Clause 10 – Improvement: incident investigation, NCRs and continual improvement

All training levels apply clauses directly to Saudi industrial scenarios from oil and gas, construction, petrochemical and utilities sectors. Permit to work, working at height, confined space and H2S hazard management are used as operational control examples throughout the programme.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Who Needs ISO 45001 Training in Saudi Arabia?

HSE Officers and Safety Supervisors

Site safety professionals who need a working knowledge of ISO 45001 clauses and their application on Saudi industrial projects. Internal auditor training is the minimum recommended level for HSE officers. With internal auditor status, they can run the annual OHS audit cycle and produce audit reports without relying on external consultants for every audit visit.

HSE Managers and Directors

Senior HSE professionals responsible for the OHS management system, internal audit programme and certification body relationship. The lead auditor qualification is the appropriate level — covering audit planning, team management, NCR writing, closing meetings, and managing the relationship with the certification body across the three-year ISO 45001 certification cycle.

Aramco and SABIC Contractors

Contractors working on Aramco and SABIC projects in Jubail, Dammam, Ras Tanura and across the Eastern Province, where ISO 45001 compliance documentation is part of contractor prequalification packs. TVTC-accredited training certificates from PITC KSA are accepted by Aramco in vendor prequalification documentation and contractor safety management submissions.

Quality and IMS Professionals

QMS and OHS professionals building toward an Integrated Management System (IMS) combining ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001. Lead auditor training across all three opens the path to IMS auditor status, increasingly required for multi-discipline contractor teams on large-scale Saudi EPC projects and for companies pursuing Vision 2030 sustainability and localisation objectives.

QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions – ISO 45001 Training Saudi Arabia

What is ISO 45001 and why do Saudi companies need it?

ISO 45001:2018 is the international Occupational Health and Safety management system standard that replaced OHSAS 18001 in 2021. Saudi companies need it because it is required for contractor prequalification on Aramco and SABIC projects, referenced in government tenders, and aligned with Vision 2030 workplace safety targets. It provides a structured, auditable framework for managing OHS risks across the organisation.

What ISO 45001 training courses does PITC KSA offer in Saudi Arabia?

PITC KSA offers three levels: Awareness (1 day, for all workers), Internal Auditor (2 days, for those running internal OHS audits), and Lead Auditor (5 days, for HSE managers and those leading the certification audit programme). All are TVTC-accredited and available in Arabic and English across Jubail, Dammam, Riyadh and Jeddah.

Is ISO 45001 training available in Arabic in Saudi Arabia?

Yes. PITC KSA delivers all ISO 45001 training levels in Arabic and English. Bilingual delivery is available for corporate groups where participants have mixed language preferences. All course materials and written assessments are provided in both languages.

How long does the ISO 45001 lead auditor course take?

The ISO 45001 Lead Auditor course runs five full days. Assessment includes a written exam plus a practical role-play audit. Candidates who pass receive the TVTC-accredited ISO 45001 Lead Auditor certificate. Our dedicated Jubail programme is suited to contractor teams in the Eastern Province.

Does PITC KSA offer group and corporate ISO 45001 training in Saudi Arabia?

Yes. PITC KSA offers in-house corporate delivery of all ISO 45001 training levels at client sites across Saudi Arabia including Jubail, Dammam, Riyadh, Jeddah and remote project locations. Corporate bookings of four or more participants qualify for in-house scheduling. Contact us to arrange a bespoke schedule.

What is the difference between ISO 45001 internal auditor and lead auditor training?

The internal auditor course (2 days) trains participants to audit their own organisation’s OHS management system. The lead auditor course (5 days) qualifies participants to lead audit teams, manage the entire audit programme, and engage with certification bodies. For most HSE managers, the lead auditor course is the better long-term investment.

Does OHSAS 18001 still count for Aramco and SABIC contractor prequalification?

No. OHSAS 18001 was formally withdrawn in 2021 after a three-year transition period. Any company referencing OHSAS 18001 in contractor prequalification documentation or tender submissions is citing a withdrawn standard. ISO 45001 is the only valid OHS management system standard accepted for compliance purposes.
