H2S (Hydrogen Sulfide) Properties:
H2S Toxicity and Exposure Limits
Saudi OSHA Limits:
- PEL (Permissible Exposure Limit): 10 ppm (8-hour TWA)
- STEL (Short-Term Exposure Limit): 15 ppm (15 minutes)
- IDLH (Immediately Dangerous to Life/Health): 100 ppm
Where H2S is Found in Saudi Operations:
Recognizing H2S Hazards:
Low-level chronic exposure:
High-level acute exposure:
First Aid for H2S Exposure:
- Rescue (if trained and equipped with SCBA):
- Never enter H2S atmosphere without SCBA
- Drag victim to fresh air immediately
- Call for emergency medical help
- Remove contaminated clothing
- CPR if not breathing (use barrier device)
- Oxygen administration (if available and trained)
- Medical evaluation required even if victim recovers (delayed pulmonary edema can be fatal)
Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA):
Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) is required when entering H₂S atmospheres above 10 ppm, during confined space entry where H₂S may be present, for emergency rescue in H₂S environments, and during firefighting because smoke can contain toxic gases including H₂S. While using SCBA, users should breathe normally, frequently monitor air levels, exit before the low-pressure alarm activates, remain calm to conserve air, and maintain communication with team members. Emergency escape SCBAs are smaller units with a 5–10 minute supply, designed strictly for escape, and require regular practice to ensure rapid donning in under 30 seconds.
Practical Component:
- Hands-on SCBA practice:
- Donning and doffing SCBA (multiple times until proficient)
- Seal checking facepiece
- Reading air pressure gauge
- Experiencing breathing resistance
- Simulated emergency donning (timed)
H2S Emergency Response:
- Alarm activation
- Evacuation to upwind location
- Accounting for personnel
- Rescue procedures (only if trained and equipped)
- Notification of emergency services
- Scene control (prevent untrained rescuers from entering)
Saudi H2S Regulations:
- Saudi Aramco H2S safety requirements
- SABIC H2S exposure control
- Saudi labor law requirements for H2S training
- Signage and warning requirements
Assessment: Written exam + practical SCBA donning assessment
Certification: H2S & SCBA Awareness Certificate
Duration: 1 day (8 hours)
Validity: 3 years (annual refresher recommended)

Q: Is fire warden training mandatory in Saudi Arabia?
A: Yes. Saudi Civil Defense regulations require designated, trained fire wardens in all workplaces. The number of fire wardens required depends on building size and occupancy (typically minimum 1 per floor or per 50 employees). Fire wardens must be trained and retrained every 2 years.
Q: How often must fire wardens renew their certification?
A: TVTC fire warden certificates are valid for 2 years. Refresher training required for renewal. Many companies also conduct annual fire warden refresher sessions (shorter, focused on updates and drill review).
Q: What if we don't have outdoor space for live fire training?
A: For on-site corporate training, we need an outdoor area (parking lot, yard) approximately 10m x 10m for safe live fire training setup. If your facility truly has no suitable space, we can arrange training at our Jubail training yard or a nearby suitable location. However, live fire training is essential – we don’t substitute with video or simulation.
Q: Can you help us develop our emergency response plan?
A: Yes. Beyond training, we offer emergency planning consultation services:
- Emergency response plan development
- Evacuation procedure writing and diagram creation
- Emergency equipment recommendations
- Drill planning and facilitation
- Fire risk assessment
- Civil Defense inspection preparation
Contact us for consultation proposal.
Q: Will training reduce our insurance premiums?
A: Many Saudi insurance companies offer premium discounts (10-20%) for companies with documented emergency response training programs. Requirements vary by insurer:
- Some require fire warden training for all designated wardens
- Some require fire extinguisher training for all employees
- Some require both plus documented fire drills
Check with your insurance provider. Provide them with training certificates and attendance records to apply for discount. Even without immediate discount, reducing fire incidents and claims will lower future premiums.
